Importance of STEM Education

What is STEM education?

STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to education that stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM education encourages creativity, leadership, problem-solving, and other essential skills. STEM, originally known as SMET, got its name in 2001 from the National Science Foundation. Soon after, the STEM curriculum has been used in China, Australia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and many other countries.


Why is STEM so important?

STEM education fosters many critical skills that include but are not limited to teamwork, critical thinking, adaptability, and creativity. The National Center for Education Statistics finds that “Young adults with bachelor’s or higher degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) tend to have more positive economic outcomes, such as higher median earnings, than do those with degrees in non-STEM fields”. STEM education allows students to learn in a classroom environment that allows them to make and learn from mistakes. In addition, STEM education activities allow students with different learning abilities to collaborate and problem-solve together. Furthermore, STEM learning encourages students to apply knowledge and concepts in various situations.
