Class environments are crucial to fostering effective student learning, as the majority of students spend a large amount of time sitting in a school classroom. There are various elements of a learning environment that enhance student focus and achievement:
Tangible Elements: The physical environment of a classroom is one of the most influential factors of student learning (e.g. supply organization, cleanliness, furniture arrangement, etc.). The organization of a classroom is important in maintaining discipline. Visual distractions like poor infrastructure and messes are common distractions that contribute to a lack of student focus. In my experiences as a student, a bright, clean, visually appealing, and organized environment helps me focus on schoolwork as opposed to physical distractions around me.
Intangible Elements: These factors include but are not limited to the ambiance of the classroom, lighting, and auditory environment. Sound plays a large role in student learning, as loud noises can be easily distracting. A bright environment prevents fatigue and enhances focus. The ambiance of a classroom is important in affecting students’ moods. Maintaining a positive environment improves student engagement. When I’m in the classroom, I find that a calm environment improves my ability to focus and productivity.
Emotional Elements: It is essential to have a positive emotional environment. These elements include inter-student relationships and attention to mental health. It is important for teachers to focus on these aspects and work towards improving them. Although these factors are harder to alter than tangible and intangible elements, they are just as important in helping students make the most out of their learning experiences.
